1. Words of Wisdom

"The more you read and observe about this politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The one that's out always looks the best." – Will Rogers, Illiterate Digest (1924)

"The purpose of life is a life of purpose." – Robert Byrne

"People of character do the right thing, not because they think it will change the world but because they refuse to be changed by the world." – Michael Josephson

"An old man was asked what had robbed him of joy the most in his lifetime. He replied, 'Things that never happened.'" – Source unknown

"Andrew Carnegie, who amassed a fortune of over 400 million dollars ended up giving 99.5% of it away. He said this about it, 'The man who dies rich, dies disgraced.'" – Richard Fairchild

"A little faith is faith as a spark of fire is fire." – Thomas Watson

"Feeling grateful or appreciative of someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that you appreciate and value into your life." – Christiane Northrup, M.D.

2. On the Lighter Side

On my first day in basic training, we were lined up in a row, each of us in turn having to shout our last names.

After the guy next to me had yelled, "Florence," it was my turn.

I had no sooner called out my name when the training instructor was in my face, demanding to know if I was some kind of smart aleck. Satisfied that I wasn't, the red-faced TI told me never to stand next to that guy again.

3. What Cancer Cannot Do

Photo by Stan Perry, taken at the rose
garden at the
Australian Inland Botanic
Gardens near Mildura, Victoria, Australia.

Cancer is limited:
It cannot cripple love,
It cannot shatter hope,
It cannot corrode faith,
It cannot eat away peace,
It cannot destroy confidence,
It cannot kill friendship,
It cannot shut out memories,
It cannot silence courage,
It cannot invade the soul,
It cannot reduce eternal life,
It cannot quench the spirit,
It cannot lessen the power
     of the resurrection.

        – Perry Smith

A Daily Encounter reader who sent the above article and photo wrote: "I appreciate so much receiving your Daily Encounter via email. There is so much to learn, and we never stop learning.

"I was encouraged by the words, 'What Cancer Cannot Co!' As having been through this journey with Stan, my husband, I understand. I have made something for you which includes the words, and have added one of my favorite photos I have named, "My Peaceful Place."

The words are an inspiration. It is obvious to me that whoever wrote them knows first hand about the cancer experience. It certainly can't take away what is precious to us, no matter what we experience in our lifetime.

4. What I Kept and What I Saved

It's an old story but the meaning is still true. A very wealthy man donated the money to a college for a new building. During the Depression he was wiped out. He was ridiculed by some friends for having given the building to the college. "That's not the way I see it," he said. "That building is all that's left from my lifetime of work. What I gave away has been saved, what I kept has been lost."

5. Driving While Drowsy

There is a sign series on the West Virginia Turnpike that says, "Driving while drowsy can put you to sleep—permanently."

Drowsy, uncaring living can [also] put us to sleep—permanently. That kind of person, Jesus says, is separating himself from God until it becomes permanent, by digging a chasm between himself and heaven that even the love of God cannot bridge.

6. Final Words

By Michael Josephson of Character Counts (537.2)

If you knew you were dying, what would your final words be?

I was at a luncheon where more than a dozen highly accomplished people were given two minutes each to answer that question. They were prominent scientists (including a Nobel Prize winner), successful business executives, and noted academics, doctors, lawyers, journalists, and one astronaut. Despite their imposing resumes, not one person made a single reference to their work or vast accomplishments.

It proved the truth of the insight underlying Harold Kushner's statement: "I never met anyone on their deathbed who said, 'I wish I'd spent more time at the office.'"

Our work may be a vital part of our lives, but in the end what matters are people and relationships.

All of the speakers addressed their last words to loved ones—a life partner, child, sibling, or special friend. The words were from the heart, and it was a touching experience. But what struck me most was realizing how unlikely it is that any of us will actually have the opportunity to deliver final words. Death is not likely to be that predictable or efficient.

The fact is, the way we live our life, the choices we make, and our daily words and actions may be the final messages we send to our loved ones. So if there's something you should say—expressing your love or gratitude or maybe regrets for things you did or failed to do about rifts in the relationship—say it now and say it from your heart.

This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts.

7. Let Your Light Shine

Sample of Daily Encounter by Dick Innes

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."1

According to an article in the Sermon Fodder List, Edward Kimball, a layman, gathered the nerve to share his Christian faith with Dwight L. Moody, a shoe salesman, who accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Dwight Moody became one of the greatest evangelists of his day. The world renowned Moody Bible Institute in Chicago was founded by D. L. Moody.

"But, do you know 'the rest of the story?' Dwight Moody went to England and worked a profound change in the ministry of F.B. Meyer. F.B. Meyer, with his new evangelistic fervor, influenced J. Wilbur Chapman. Chapman helped in the ministry of converted baseball player Billy Sunday, who had a profound impact upon Mordecai Ham. And Mordecai Ham, holding a revival in North Carolina, led Billy Graham to Christ. And the man who started it all was a layman, Edward Kimball, who took seriously Christ's commission to be a witness in his world."

"Keep on sowing your seed," says the Word of God, "for you never know which will grow—perhaps it all will."2

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to so live that my life always will be a shining light that will attract and draw others to you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus' name, amen."

1. Jesus (Matthew 5:16).
2. King Solomon (Ecclesiastes 11:6, TLB).
