1. Words of Wisdom

"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpation." – James Madison, 1788

"Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength. It does not enable us to escape evil. It makes us unfit to face evil when it comes. It is the interest you pay on trouble before it comes." – Corrie ten Boom

"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness or abilities that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." – William Penn

"You can easily judge the character of others by how they treat those who can do nothing for them or to them." – Malcolm Forbes

"Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish." – Sam Walton

"Character is built daily by the way one thinks and acts, thought by thought, action by action." – Helen Douglas

2. On the Lighter Side

A mom was driving her five year old son to McDonald's one day and they passed a car accident. Whenever the Mom saw something terrible like that, she would always say a prayer for those who might be hurt, so she pointed and said to her son, "We should pray."

From the back seat she heard his earnest request: "Please, God, don't let those cars block the entrance to McDonald's."

3. Permitting Lies Belie

"There is no vice so mean, so pitiful, so contemptible; as he who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and a third time, till at length it becomes habitual. He tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world's believing him."

        – Thomas Jefferson, 1785

4. The Rescuing Hug

This is a picture from an article called, "The Rescuing Hug." The article details the first week of life of a set of twins.

Apparently, each were in their respective incubators, and one was not expected to live. A hospital nurse fought against the hospital rules and placed the babies in one incubator. When they were placed together, the healthier of the two threw an arm over her sister in an endearing embrace.

The smaller baby's heart rate stabilized and her temperature rose to normal. They both survived, and are thriving! In fact, now that the two girls are home, they still sleep together, and still snuggle [at least they did back then].

The hospital changed their policy after they saw the effect of putting the two girls together and the power of a hug.

5. Deprivation and Crime ... Any Relationship?

Chuck Colson said, "The evidence shows over and over that crime is not caused by deprivation, but by depravity. And the answer is conversion." That is, conversion to Christ.

This was in relationship to the fact that during the economic downturn, crime rate dropped while the liberal left have claimed for years that poverty causes crime.

They are not interested in considering the fact that all men are sinners.

6. There Are Two Kinds of People

By Michael Josephson of Character Counts (671.4)

A listener called me to task concerning a story about a man who told his son there are two kinds of people: those who return their shopping carts and those who don't.

His first point was that it's dangerous and foolish to use simplistic categorizations. On this I have to agree, although I didn't think the father who divided the world into two categories was being literal. I think he was making the point that we all have endless choices – either to do the right thing instinctively and consistently or to join those who find excuses not to. The original story came from a book Hugs for Dad by John William Smith. I don't know if it's literally true or not, but it's a powerful parable.

His second point was that he objected to the implication that anyone who doesn't return shopping carts is falling short on any scale of virtue. "As long as markets pay union wages and benefits to employees to collect these carts," he said, "I shouldn't reduce the amount of their work."

This rationale ignores the story's main message: Be considerate, clean up after yourself, and make life easier, not harder, for the next guy. Under his analysis, we help custodians and housekeepers by making a mess.

I don't think I was a bad person when I didn't return shopping carts, but I think I'm a little bit better now that I do. You see, there are two kinds of people in the world: those who want to be better and those who don't.

This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts.

7. When the Devil Knocks on Your Door

A sample of Daily Encounter by Dick Innes

When the Devil Knocks on My Door

"Resist the devil and he will flee from you."1

A friend recently gave me the following suggestion: "When Satan comes to remind me about my past, I remind him about his future."

One thing Satan does is continually accuse us before God (See Revelation 12:10). He will accuse us, too, of our past in our mind if we allow him to. When he does, however, we can remind him not only about his future in hell, but also that Christ shed his blood on the cross and gave his life to pay for our sins and has washed them all away. So what's there to accuse us of if we have confessed our sins to Christ and asked for and accepted his forgiveness? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Because Christ died for us and cleansed us from our sins, we can, in his name, resist the devil and, as James said, he will flee from us. Satan hates the name of Jesus. Be sure to mention it when Satan comes to tempt you. Instead of trying to reason with Satan, just remind him of his future and mention the name of Jesus ... and pray a simply prayer, "Help God! Help!"

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you that you have defeated Satan and all his evil emissaries, and that there is power in your name to defend against any and all of Satan's devious ways and to defeat him. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."
