Cry Out to God

"Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."1

In adventure movies, we often see people trapped and helpless, looking for an escape. Real life can sometimes feel that way, too, and when we begin to look for a way out, our prayers are filled with pleas for deliverance, physical healing, changes in circumstances, or provision.

Have you ever considered that even more important than physical help is spiritual deliverance? (Ephesians 6:12). First and foremost, Jesus Christ freed us from the power and punishment of sin. He knows that we are powerless in the face of sinful habits, uncontrolled emotions, and ungodly thoughts. He wants to free us from these sins.

Let us follow the example of the psalmist, who encouraged us to cry out to God. —Psalm 50:15. Admit your helplessness before Him and yourself. Confess any fear, pride, or disbelief. Then turn your gaze toward the Lord.

Allow the Holy Spirit to fill your soul with the truth of the Bible. Meditate on it and commit yourself to obeying its direction. Then, trust God and hope that He will transform you internally. There will come a day when the feeling of helplessness will be replaced by the joy of being free. When that happens, praise God.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when in life I feel trapped and helpless I want to cry out to You, only to You. Lord, I want to allow the Holy Spirit to fill my soul with Your truth, to be transformed internally. I want to obey Your direction at all times, in each and every area of my life. I place my life at Your service. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

1.    Psalm 50:14-15 (NIV).
