Faith and Belief

The father instantly cried out, —I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief! —

While Jesus was on Earth, some of his miracles included casting demons out of people. One of these people was a young boy. The father of the boy had originally asked the disciples to cast the demon out, but they were not able to. As a result, he went to Jesus so that He could do what the disciples could not. As soon as he got to Jesus, the demon threw the boy into a violent convulsion and threw him to the ground as he was writhing and foaming at the mouth. The father asked Jesus that if he could do it, to please help them. I love how Jesus responded, What do you mean IF I can? He went on to say that anything is possible if a person believes. The father immediately expressed his belief and asked Jesus to help him overcome his unbelief. Then, Jesus rebuked the evil spirit out of his son.

This is something that I am sure we can all relate to because everyone, at some point (or many points) in their life, will believe that God can and will come through, but we doubt Him at the same time. It is because of our sinful nature that we doubt God. However, God loves us and tells us to have faith and trust Him even when we find it difficult to do so (James 1:6, Proverbs 3: 5-6, Isaiah 55:8-9). Even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains (Matthew 17:20). So as long as we have some faith and believe, God can and will help us.

Suggested prayer: Lord, thank you for promising to help me in my time of need. Please help me to have faith in you and help me to believe that Your plans are much greater than mine. Please remind me of your love and your presence in my life. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  1. Mark 9:24 (NLT).
