Dressed in Righteousness
I delight greatly in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness.1
During the 1992 Summer Olympics, the official medal stand uniforms, that were to be worn by all U.S. athletes at the awards ceremony, were provided by Reebok. Charles Barkley, of the U.S. basketball Dream Team and sponsored by Nike, would not allow himself to be seen wearing the brand of a competitor. He decided to creatively cover up the logos with American flags in an effort to stay true to his brand. Mr. Barkley firmly established his loyalty to Nike when he famously stated that he had “two million reasons not to wear Reebok”, alluding to the sum he receives from Nike for doing so. While others had no problem donning the Olympic sponsored outfit, Charles Barkley’s steadfast refusal to wear Reebok instead of Nike came down to his loyalty to the brand as well as large financial incentives.2
When it comes to being clothed with righteousness, many Christians are quick to lose sight of our loyalties and appreciation for what God has done for us. The temptation to wear something other than the righteousness of God is sometimes too enticing. We find ourselves slipping into the worldly fashion because we want to please an audience and forget that we gear up for an audience of One. When we came to Jesus, he clothed us with His spiritual garments of Salvation. He granted us all of the riches of Heaven and an eternity by His side. The incentives that come with living for Christ and being loyal to His Word are far greater than any earthly brand could offer. Yet, we are easily swayed by the attraction of temptation to sin. Remaining loyal to God and clothing ourselves in His righteousness means that we will actively live a life of integrity and truth. If you are unsure what brand to wear today, Ephesians chapter 6, verses 10-18, give us the perfect outfit to make sure we walk through this world dressed in righteousness!
Suggested prayer: Dear Lord, when I was at my lowest you saw my need and wrapped me in your mercy and righteousness. Keep that ever present in my mind so that when I am tempted to sway, I remain loyal to you and your promises. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
