Transforming Inadequacy into Victory
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”1
From time to time, a feeling of inadequacy will arise in all of us, but through the Holy Spirit, we have the power to combat it. Here are three suggested steps to take:
1. Recognize your weakness. Imagine that a neighbor tells you that his sister is facing a fatal disease and is afraid of what comes after death. God impels you to share your hope in Christ, but inadequacy almost stops you. Feeling insecure is normal, following God’s direction requires acknowledging our fear. For example, we can pray, “Lord, I don’t feel capable. Help me to bear witness of You to my neighbor.”
2. Pray for strength. Say, “Father, I know this is what you want me to do, so I trust that you will be faithful to your Word. You are all that I need and you will go with me.” The Lord takes responsibility to enable you to know what to say, how to say it, and deliver your message in the proper spirit (Matthew 10:20).
3. Take a step of faith. Do something that propels you toward God-given opportunities, allowing you to demonstrate your power and ability by depending on Him.
Let God transform your inadequacy into victory. He delights in manifesting Himself in the lives of His children. As you look beyond your limitations and fix your eyes on Christ, you will find joy and confidence.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I recognize that many times I do not feel able to speak of You to others. But I also recognize that I am not alone and that You enable me to know what to say and how to say it. Lord, please transform my inadequacy into victory, and may it all be for Your honor and Your glory. I pray in the name of Christ Jesus, Amen.
