The Power of the Holy Spirit
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”1
If you have received Christ as your Savior, then the One who raised Him from the dead, the Holy Spirit, resides within you (Romans 8:11). Think of the incomparable power it took to bring about the resurrection. And now the Spirit of God pours out that same power to produce godliness in all who follow the Lord.
In Galatians 5:22-23, we read about the “fruit of the Spirit”—the character and conduct produced by the Holy Spirit. These are qualities that we cannot consistently generate on our own. Especially in this day and age, the most powerful message we can give is the way we live. The world needs to see families who love each other, people who work with integrity, and believers who serve others.
By showing peace instead of anxiety, or patience instead of frustration, a Christian bears witness to the beauty of God’s good news. The strongest gospel message doesn’t necessarily come from a pulpit, but from wherever you work, live, and rest, because of Jesus Christ in you.
From now on, ask yourself: What message do I preach through my words and actions?
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, today’s passage prompts me to reflect on my life. What message am I preaching with my words and actions? At home, with my family, at work, and with my friends. Beloved Father, help me through Your Holy Spirit to produce fruit that will be reflected in my character and behavior. May my actions honor and glorify you. Help me to fill myself more with You and less with myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
