The Joy of Forgiveness

“Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!”1

Think of a time when you did something you knew was not right. More than likely you felt a sense of guilt come over you and you couldn’t even rest because of it. As hard as it is to face the source of your guilt and repent, the relief you feel once you have confessed it and made amends brings peace and renews your joy.

We know that sin separates us from God because God cannot see sin. This separation is something that David knew well because, like you and I, he had committed sins and was carrying the overwhelming weight of those sins, which he refused to confess. But oh the joy he felt when he repented of his sins and stopped trying to hide his guilt! He was able to experience the joy and blessing it is to live free from the bondage of sin. The apostle Paul was also someone who knew great sin, but once he was confronted by God and repented, he was able to reiterate David’s words in Romans 4:7-8 when he said, “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.”

The Bible says we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but unfortunately, many have tried to hide their sin or excuse the guilt they feel by blaming it on their past, on the person who has offended them, or simply because of the pride that keeps us from admitting we were wrong. Whatever the case, you are responsible for what you do and don’t do. If you refuse to repent, and continue blaming others, not only will you miss out on the joy and blessings that come from God’s forgiveness, but these excuses will not work when you stand before God one day. However, when you repent and allow God to create a clean heart within you, the weight lifts and you experience true freedom and the blessings God has in store for you.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, please forgive me if I have tried to hide my sins or make excuses for them. Today I choose to confess them openly to you and allow you to clear my record! Create in me a clean heart and allow me to experience the joy of your forgiveness. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
