Legacy of Faith

“Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.”1

We just celebrated Mother’s day a few days ago, which tends to be a day when children share words of gratitude for all their mom has taught them. In most cases they share how their mom has inspired them through her strength, courage, perseverance, patience, and love. However, Mother’s day can also be difficult for some as they remember the broken relationship they have with their mother, or perhaps they lost their mother, and this day brings them grief as they miss their loved one. The role of a mother in a child’s life is extremely important and should be seen as a great privilege!

Timothy’s mom, Eunice, was a pretty amazing woman. Although there is only one mention of her in the Bible (2 Timothy 1:5), along with his grandmother Lois, we know that they were faithful women who passed on their faith to Timothy as he grew. It is unsure of the whereabouts of Timothy’s dad, as the Bible doesn’t clarify that, but it is thought that perhaps he had died or was absent, as Timothy was primarily raised by his mom and grandma, then later we see Paul take that fatherly role in his life. The foundation of faith that Timothy was given prepared the way for the great ministry God had in store for him.

Our job as parents is the most meaningful job we will ever have. God has given us our children to instruct them in His way. In most cases, we only have 18 years until they go off to college! I once attended a parenting class where they reminded us how the days are long, but the years are short; this could not be more accurate. As parents, we may feel exhausted most days, but it is important to remember that each moment we have with our children can be used to build a strong foundation. Each one of our reactions, even in the face of difficult situations, can model God’s love and patience. With all the hardships of this life, a faith in Jesus is truly the best gift we can leave our children.

Suggested prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the children you have entrusted to me. Help me be an example of faith, love, patience, and grace that will lead them to a personal relationship with you. May they grow to be strong men and women of faith who will be used by you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
