Pursuing Purpose

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.1

You’ve just walked through the gate of a New Year and as you look back on the last twelve months ask yourself, “What did I accomplish?” “Did I meet any goals?” “Did I make a difference?” Do your answers surprise you? If you’re still left thinking about it, maybe it’s time to pursue a new purpose. If you were unable to accomplish the goals you set for yourself last year, (and the year before that) then maybe it’s time to set new goals. Instead of chasing after things that may never satisfy you, find joy in pursuing the purpose God has for you.

You have probably envisioned those things that will bring you great satisfaction; you’ve probably found yourself day-dreaming of the possibilities that accomplishing certain goals can bring you. When you have a vision of what can be, it keeps your hope alive. Having purpose will keep you moving forward and imagine the joy you will feel because you are certain that your purpose is also God’s plan!

Perhaps you’ve not yet committed your life to Christ, so you're not sure you will like it. Let me remind you today that we were created for God’s purpose and the plans he has for you are perfect! He loves you and wants the best for you. You can trust God to guide your every step! Taking that first step is never easy, but as a child who is learning to walk, once you start, it just gets easier. Sometimes you may trip and fall; other times you will be running. Every step will bring you closer to pursuing your ultimate purpose.

Throughout the Bible we find examples of men and women who surrendered their lives to God and found their purpose. Moses found his purpose while running from the scene of a crime. David found his purpose while tending sheep. Esther found her purpose while competing in a beauty pageant. Daniel found his purpose while choosing a healthy diet. Peter found his purpose while fishing. Paul found his purpose while persecuting Christians. Jesus found His purpose on a cruel cross. At times the journey was uneventful, other times frightening, at times there was loss or pain, most of the time there was uncertainty, but in every circumstance there was faith and hope in God's Holy Plan.

This is a New Year and God is waiting to help you pursue your purpose. Start by taking the first step and that is putting your faith in Jesus Christ — that is your ultimate purpose!

Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, I have found it so difficult to reach my goals because I have been pursuing the wrong purpose. But today I want to begin to pursue the purpose you have for me, that will bring me lasting joy and peace. I put my dreams, my goals, my life in your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
