Love in Action

"After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, 'Do you understand what I was doing? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because that's what I am.  And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.'"1

Jesus came to change people's perspective completely. From the beginning of his ministry, the characteristics he demonstrated were opposite of those possessed by earthly rulers. His ministry and Kingship were characterized by love, humility and service towards others. He engaged with his disciples and followers, his teaching was relational, and his words were always consistent with his actions.

As Jesus sat with his disciples during their last meal together, observing the Passover, he left his disciples an important lesson. He wanted to leave a vivid example of what was important to him as he got up from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist and started washing his disciple's feet one by one. After he was finished, he asked his disciples, "Do you understand what I was doing?" He wanted them to understand that they were to imitate him in serving others and leave no room for confusion or excuses. Jesus was setting the example of what kind of leaders he wants us to be, and how servanthood is for everyone, regardless of title or position.

Jesus is love. Everything he did and continues to do is out of love for us. The greatest demonstration of his love was the sacrifice he made on the cross so that we could be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life through him. Jesus' command to his disciples remains just as true for us today, "Do as I have done to you."2 How can we put his love in action today?

Suggested prayer: Heavenly Father, I am speechless as I think of your great love towards us. My human mind struggles to understand such an incomparable, unconditional, and selfless love. Thank you, Jesus, for setting the example for us of how you want us to live. A life of service (love in action) towards others. Give me your heart and allow me to be more like you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus' name, amen.
