"If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."1
Mother Teresa once said, "Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service."
The Bible is filled with verses about love... God's love for us, our love for God, our love for others. However, regardless of the passage we are reading, the importance of loving one another is evident. God left no room for confusion when it comes to the importance of love. 1 Corinthians 13:2 says, "If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing." Wow. That sums it up well wouldn't you say?
God is love. Therefore, as we grow and mature in our relationship with the Lord, our lives should reflect his love to others, not just with our words, but with action. What are some simple, yet meaningful ways, that we can put love into action? It could be listening to a hurting friend, sharing a smile with a stranger, giving a compliment, being patient, or meeting a need for someone. My kids love carrying snacks in the car to share with anyone who may need them. This may be something simple, but it has taught me to be on the lookout and be aware of possible needs of those around me. When you listen to people's stories, you hear their heart. If you ask God to give you discernment and help you respond according to His will, He will give you clarity on who you may be able to serve, and how to go about it.
The important thing is that we invest the love we have received into the lives of others. Only then will we truly be able to experience God's heart and see Him expand our "ministry". Whether that be at home with our spouse and families, our neighbors, our community, our church... let us constantly seek ways to love through action.
Suggested prayer, Dear God, I did nothing to earn your love, yet you freely gave it to me. I will never do enough to repay your love, yet it is unconditional and unwavering. I pray that you allow me to reflect your love with those you put in my life daily. Let my faith be tangible to others through your love in action. Give me discernment and lead me to those you would have me serve. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus' name, amen.
