"As water
reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart."1
"By wisdom a
house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms
are filled with all precious and pleasant riches."2
I heard it long ago, and lately
I've come across this saying again: "Your home is a reflection of your heart".
What a powerful message in these eight short words! There are those inevitable
days when my house looks as if a tornado swept through, and everything has
landed in an unruly fashion. There are those moments when clutter overwhelms my
hall and shelves. And if I am to take a moment to ponder the condition of my
heart, I have most likely neglected to cleanse my soul with the refreshing
Words of my Savior.
Today's verse cannot be any clearer.
Our lives, our homes, reflect the person we are inside. If our lives are
unorganized and cluttered with worry and stress, or if our home just can't seem
to stay tidy, then it is very possible that we have been neglecting our time
with God. When we try in our own strength to make things right in our home, the
mess quickly returns. However, by spending time in God's Word, we fill our
heart with God's wisdom and understanding – the key ingredients to building a
house filled with "precious and pleasant riches"; not the material kind, but
the riches we acquire from spending quality time with our family and friends.
When our home is a mess, we can't enjoy the gift of hospitality because we are
ashamed for others to see the mess we live in. But when our heart is clean and
in tune with God then our life and home reflect that peace in us.
God wants to dwell in our home,
spiritual and physical. Why don't we invite him in today and allow our home to
reflect our hearts filled with the Holy Spirit?
Suggested Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, far too long
have I allowed my physical home to be cluttered and untidy because I have
allowed my spiritual home to grow messy. I ask that you come into my heart and
cleanse it of all things that might keep me from reflecting your wisdom and
understanding in my life. Fill the rooms of my home with the knowledge and
grace of your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
