A Precious Commodity
“Pay careful attention, then, to
how you live"not as unwise people but as wise"making the most of the time,
because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish but understand what the Lord’s
will is.”1
When the pandemic hit us last year, and
schools and workplaces closed down, many of us found ourselves at home with A
LOT of time on our hands. At first, it was a nice change to our daily routines;
but soon, we found that we had too much time on our hands. There was only so
much cleaning and reorganizing that could be done! Those with children, might
have found their days very full! Many welcomed this much needed time, yet
others, found themselves missing the busyness of their routine-filled lives.
However, it's what we did with our time that made the difference. If our time
was spent watching television, or scrolling through our phones, then I imagine
you felt a sense of boredom and maybe even frustration. But, if you were
finally able to finish a project, or begin a new one, then you probably felt a
great sense of accomplishment.
God gave us twenty-four hours every day to
use wisely. When we make the most of those hours, we find that we can get so
much accomplished; we may even find ourselves getting a full night of restful
sleep! But when we mismanage our day, we find ourselves running around,
hurrying to finish tasks, squeezing in time for dinner with the family, and
having a restless sleep because we have so much on our mind. Our time is a
precious commodity that should not be wasted. Today’s verse, found in Ephesians
chapter 5, tells us to “Pay Careful attention” to how we live, and to “Make the
most of the time, because the days are evil”! In the Apostle Paul’s day, the
“Evil” was the fact that they were under heavy persecution or opposition. In
today’s time, our “Evil” is much more active because we are surrounded by
thieves of time, ranging from idle technology time to simple preoccupations.
Our natural course, the course our flesh leads us on, usually leads us toward
that “Evil” instead of pursuing Christlikeness.
Let us be as the wise " and not the unwise "
and make the very most of every opportunity granted to us by our Creator. Let
us not waste this precious commodity!
Suggested Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, please show me how to
be wise with my time. I may have a busy schedule but help me make the most of
the time you give me. Help me prioritize my day so I don’t miss out on those
important moments with my family. I give you my day and my time. In Jesus’
name, Amen.
