Redeemed and Blessed

"Don't you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves... Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."1

In the Genealogy of Jesus, that we find in Matthew 1, there are four women mentioned. It is unusual enough to find women listed in a Jewish genealogy, and the women mentioned make it even more surprising. If you were to look for matriarchs listed in Jesus' ancestry, you might expect to find names such as Sarah, Rachel, Rebecca, etc. However, if you take a moment to read it, you will discover this was not the case. Among the 4 names listed is Rahab which, if you remember, was a prostitute in the city of Jericho who hid the Israelite spies (Joshua 2:1). Now why would God direct the spies to the house of a woman? And one who didn't have the best reputation?

There are many reasons why God might have chosen this particular woman to help the spies. But the one that touches my heart the most is that other people might have underestimated Rahab's potential based on her past and present circumstances. But not God. He needed someone brave and bold for the job at hand. When the spies arrived, instead of backing out in fear, Rahab acted swiftly and hid them on her roof. Then she redirected the king's men, clearing the way for the spies to escape. When God looked at Rahab, He didn't see her profession. He saw her potential... who she could be in Him. God knew that Rahab needed Him, and she was ready for that encounter. Her redemption was so special, that it landed her a place in Jesus' genealogy. When God destroyed the city of Jericho, Rahab and her family were spared. Rahab had found new purpose and a future which I am sure she never dreamed of.

Our God is merciful, compassionate, and forgiving. He doesn't use the perfect but perfects the imperfect. If you have ever thought you were "disqualified" from serving God because of your past experiences or mistakes, think again! Our mess has meaning in the hands of God. He wants you! Won't you open your heart to Him?

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for seeing what others don't see. I have made, and continue to make, mistakes, but I want to be used by you. Thank you for your forgiveness and grace which focuses not on my past, but on my potential. Help me trust your plan for my life. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NLT).
