"Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is
gained in a righteous life."1
England,
and many around the world, recently mourned the death of their Queen. An
upright woman who seemed to have reigned for a hundred years! Maybe because she
began her reign in her twenties, many were privileged to see her in many
different stages of her life. Those who knew her personally would say she was a
virtuous woman who lived an exemplary life. Having been the longest-reigning
British monarch in history, Queen Elizabeth, who ruled with wisdom, saw
Proverbs 3:16 become a reality for her, "Long life is in her right hand; in her
left hand are riches and honor." As a
young girl, Princess Elizabeth was greatly influenced by her mother, who
instilled in her a devout Christian faith that went hand-in-hand with an
understanding of the demands of a royal life. It is no mystery that Her
Majesty's long life and reign can be attributed to her walk with the Lord. Her
crown of gray hair was her glory; proof that she had lived a righteous life.
I
tend to complain about my gray hair and try to cover and hide it, but God's
design for us was pure and simple. Our gray hair was to be a sign of wisdom and
righteousness. Long before Queen Elizabeth's reign, King Solomon was asked of
God what he desired most, to which the monarch answered, wisdom. Rather than
riches and long life, he desired to reign with wisdom. Because of his humble
request, God granted King Solomon all three.
Kings
and Queens are appointed and anointed by God's hand. (Daniel 2:21) Those who
choose to follow and serve Him delight in the pleasure of a righteous life.
Their crown of gray hair is their glory; a symbol and example to us all.
Suggested
Prayer: Dear Lord, you have brought up kings and queens for your glory. You
fill us with wisdom upon request. Your righteousness is reflected in our crown
of grays. Thank you for your wisdom; Thank you for your mercy. Thank you for
the lives of those you have appointed to rule over us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Proverbs 16:31 (ESV).
