Daily Encounter: A Week-day Devotional by Richard (Dick) Innes of ACTS International

(Read user comments)

1. If the Horse Is Dead, Dismount

"When a thing grows weak and out of date, it is obviously soon going to disappear."1

I recall vividly what a good friend said about her church after she had been away for almost a year because of ill health. She was older so I could understand why she reacted the way she did regarding the new-style music in her church. She was very upset and said that the new group "just couldn't quite make it in Las Vegas." Unfortunately my friend died soon after from cancer. But the conflict regarding music in the church hasn't quite died—yet!

Today, however, I'm not talking about church music. What I am addressing is the need to change when change is necessary. According to Rick Warren, pastor of the Saddleback Community church and author of the book, The Purpose Driven Church, the reason that 95% of all churches in the world never grow past 300 members is because their structure keeps them from growing beyond that point. Quoting today's scripture, he said, "When a thing grows weak and out of date, it is obviously soon going to disappear. That's true of churches, too. If a church cannot change, it will eventually die."

This same principle applies to many areas of life. No, we don't want to make changes where change is not to our advantage, but there are times when we do need to make changes. When it comes to communicating the gospel, while the message itself never changes, our way and means of communicating it have to change in order to communicate effectively to the particular group we are addressing. One size doesn't fit all!

Also, whether we approve or disapprove, many things around us change and if we don't adapt, we get left behind. For instance, marriage partner roles have changed drastically from the days of our parents and grandparents. If a husband still interprets being the head of the home as being the family dictator, he will be doomed for failure (at least here in America and other parts of the world as well). Those old ways (which, by the way, were a misinterpretation of the Bible), have "gone with the wind."

A few years back, Moody Monthly, the highly respected Christian magazine, discontinued its publication after its 103-year history. Why? Because of the economy, the proliferation of Christian magazines, and because of technology. Moody Monthly, like so many other ministries, has had to turn from printed hard copy to electronic means of communication, not only to become more effective in their ministry, but also to survive.

So whether it is in our professional or personal life, let's be open to and willing to change where change is both essential and necessary.

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, in these days of rapid change, please give me the courage to change the things I need to change, the insight to know the things I must not change, and the wisdom to know the difference. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."

1. Hebrews 8:13 (Phillips paraphrase)(NIV).

"About this devotion i agree things need to change but its not changing the gospel its the way you present the message. Each person is different and some people get things differently. I know people that are gay and love God more than people that are straight. Do i agree with their way of life no I dont but who am i to judge them. God knows their struggles and when that time is right or when they ask God for forgiveness I know he will be there to break the stronghold and to forgive them. We have done so much to hurt God being gay is no diffent from lying, stealing, or cheating. Every sin is the same but they have different consequences. Please Pray and not pass judgement this is a heavy burden on other Christians and people that want to change but the way some Christians behave with so much hatred its hard to join that. Preach the gospel and remember that they are not rejecting us they are rejecting Christ. Pray for them. God Bless you all."

"I have read alot of comments about tithing it says God loves a cheerful giver. Tithing is a help to your church. I believe it is a sign showing God that you trust him. Give with your heart. He sees and he will meet your needs. You can also tithe in other ways not always money. You give your firsts to God and the rest will be taken care of"

"In 1991, our house burned. We bought another home. We were trying to pay it off before retirement. In 2002 we made a new years resolution to give $25.00 every week for Church. Jan. 3, 2002 my husband had a massive heart attack. We were making 2 house payments and we owned too much to get government help. We could not get food stamps. We gave $25.00 every week and don't know how. Sometimes we collected all the change around the house to make that commitment. We applied for disability. You have to be disabled 1 month before you can apply and there is a six month waiting period before the first check. We got the first check the third week of August. All I can say is GOD IS GOOD AND IT WAS HIS BLESSINGS. We never missed a meal. Our house payments and utilities were paid. ONLY GOD KNOWS HOW THAT WAS DONE."

"Goodday...It was a pleasure reading "To tithe or not to Tithe" sent to me by a friend of mine in Pennsylvania. Here are my comments...Tithing is part os the Law Matthew 23:23 and Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 " I didn't come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it." Before the Lord came they paid tithes so how did He fulfill it? because on the cross He said It is finished or it has been accomplished. So we can not still keep doing what was done before he came and died. Doing that will mean He died in vain. So what is the fulfillment of tithing? T understand this we must Know what happened to all the aspects of the law system Gal3:24 tells us that the law was like a school master leading us to Christ....

Response from RWI: Please note that it is requested that comments are to be from 10 to 12 lines maximum (at the most) This is why this lengthy response has been shortened."

"In the Old Testament there was several offerings that was offered up to God. And sacrifices were made to Him also. Jesus coveres all of those and became ultimate sacrifice. Leviticus 23:37
(" 'These are the LORD's appointed feasts, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for bringing offerings made to the LORD by fire—the burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings required for each day. But we tend to use money as an offering, and man made gifts. That's where God steps in and quote that same scripture He quoted to the seven churches in Revelations. I offer Christ to you oh, my brother. I offer Christ to you oh, my sister. He will give you brand new life. Man made offerings and sacrifices won't work. Only what you do for Christ will last."

"The Scripture says that man should be the head of his own home AS CHRIST IS HEAD OF THE CHURCH. He gave his very life for her with such sacrificial love. There is a hierarchy taught in Scripture, but NOT a dictatorship. "

"God give me "the insight to know the things I must not change" that's the key. When we change so that people with itching ears will come,we've gone too far. Let us stay true to the Scripture and not forsake all the old hymns that have such meaning for choruses and songs that just have rhythmn. Some contemporary music & choruses are truly Scriptural, but some aren't. May God help us to be discerning in our time. "

"Careful!!! You say change. But do not conform to the world. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Yet now it is against the law for preachers to teach the Bible verse that says homosexuals are an abomination. That is in direct violation of the US Constitution regarding freedom of religion. Some major denominations even ordain homosexuals. Woe unto the seven churches at the end times; whitewashed on the outside but filled with dead men's bones full of rot."

"Amen and amen and amen in Jesus'name, may the will of our Father be done throughout His word so as to make each and every christians heart a betterment for the whole. God is the same yesterday, today and for ternity to eternity so one must be aware to not conform himself to changes of these adultery days, but it is good to use some positive evolution in the genuine fields as technology for the sake of the Gospel having in mind that not even an iota should be taken or added to what the Holy Scriptures are involved within from old days. God bless his word and his people in Jesus name. let's all say Amen."

"Would it be justifiable to transfer to another church that I see growing in their services to God and membership? I've been a member on a church in which I have been servicing for more than five years. Our head pastor have gone out of the country for so long and have left the responsibilities to several pastors who are still studying to become a full pledged pastor. I will appreciate very much to hear from you regarding this. God bless you all.

Response from RWI: The important thing is to attend a church where they believe, teach, and preach the Word of God; where you are being spiritually fed; and where you can have genuine fellowship and the opportunity to serve God. If these needs are not being met where you are, then one should move to a church where they are being met."

"In your article of "To Tithe or Not to Tithe?" you seem to say we should tithe and offer to finance God's work on earth-if he needed the financing to run his work he would have mentioned it in gospel; otherwise we can finance it without calling them offerings and tithes-for example if we need chairs for the church we mention and collect money for that purpose.

please refer to these scriptures-Daniel 9:27; Jeremiah 31:31, 1samuel 2:22; 22:22, Heb. 9; Duet. 12:13; Acts 8:18; 1cor. 3:16; Hebrews 10:5-Offerings and sacrifices i didn't desire...

In Malachi 3:8-10;..so that there may be food in my house, WHAT IS THE HOUSE OF GOD?

if you understand the House of God from the Old testament to the New testament and know the difference between the Old covenant and New covenants-then you will know why you should tithe and offer or not tithe and offer."

"I understand fully the reason for tithing. However, as a single parent with a low income, 10% is huge. Can it not be what is afforded? By the way, the $20 mentioned in your article that people spend on entertainment; I don't. It's that tight for me, financially. If I give a tithe of say 5% and proffer this in gratitude and joy, this must still be acceptable, yes? 10% is a make or break in many low income families; from a wholly practical and realistic point of view.

Response from RWI: The important thing is that we do what we can with what we have--not only in respect to money--but with our time and talents to serve God from a grateful heart. We can all at least pray for others."
