“But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ ‘Martha, Martha’, the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed"or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’”1
Years ago, a five-year study revealed that Christians worldwide are simply becoming too busy for God.
“In data collected from over 20,000 Christians with ages ranging from 15 to 88 across 139 countries, The Obstacles to Growth Survey found that on average, more than 4 in 10 Christians around the world say they ‘often’ or ‘always’ rush from task to task. The busy life was found to be a distraction from God among Christians around the globe. About 6 in 10 Christians say that it's ‘often’ or ‘always’ true that the ‘busyness of life gets in the way of developing my relationship with God.’"
"’The accelerated pace and activity level of the modern day distracts us from God and separates us from the abundant, joyful, victorious life He desires for us,’" said Zigarelli. Zigarelli, who believes busyness and distraction may be a global pandemic, suggested breaking the cycle by ‘re-ordering our thinking,’ including ‘the way we think about who God is and how He wants us to live our lives.’"
The story of Mary and Martha is well-known and we find it in the gospel of Luke. When Martha welcomes Jesus and his disciples into her home, she was busy doing her best to show them hospitality. I am sure all that she was doing was important and had to be done, but her busyness distracted her from being present with Jesus and enjoying their time together.
Do you ever find yourself so busy that you lose sight of what is important? Does the “busyness” of life distract you from investing time in cultivating a relationship with Jesus? I know it has happened to me often! Perhaps it is time to “re-order our thinking” and refocus our time and energy in developing our relationship with Christ. As Matthew 6:33 reminds us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Suggested prayer: Dear God, forgive me for allowing myself to get so caught up in the busyness of life that I fail to make time with you a priority. I pray that you would help me put aside the distractions and prioritize my time with you. Allow me to remember that this life will pass, but I will spend eternity with you in Heaven. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
