This Little Light of Mine

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”1

Do you remember that little song we learned as children, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine”? I didn't quite understand the meaning of it as a child, but as I grew older, I began to understand just what it meant to let my light shine. I began to understand that if I have Jesus in my heart then His light is the one shining through me and not my own. The little song went on to say: “Hide it under a bushel, NO! I'm gonna let it shine”. It meant that hiding Jesus’ light was not an option, I am meant to let his light shine!

I remember one October, many years ago, hearing a fellow Christian say: “I hate Halloween because it is the devil’s day. On that night, I turn off my porch light so that the kids can’t see I'm home!” Every year, that comment rings in my ear, and every year I think, “No, this is not the devil’s day " This is the day that the Lord has made!” (Psalm 118:24) The days are not the devil’s because the Lord have given each one to us. The Lord called me to shine my light, so why then, on such a dark night, should my light be off? A lit porch light shows others that I am home, it is a welcome sight to those walking in the dark, just as my spiritual light is a welcome sight to those walking in spiritual darkness.

We have a special task to bring light to a dark world, where Jesus is not represented in every way. What an opportunity we have, especially on a night like Halloween, to make sure our light is burning bright so that even the smallest child can see Jesus shining through us! Make a special effort this year to share that light with someone. Maybe it is in the form of candy to a small child or a welcoming smile to a tired parent. Whatever it might be, give Jesus the opportunity to shine through YOU! Halloween is not the night to “hide it under a bushel”, NO! Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine!

Suggested Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, we are called to be a light in the dark places of this world. Give me the courage to allow your light to burn brightly through me, not just on Halloween, but on every night of the year. I want to let your light shine! In Jesus’ most Holy name, Amen.
