Blessed are Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”1

While each beatitude could stand on its own, Jesus compiled them into a chain, all linked together, where each build on the previous truth. They are a list of attributes for the life of a disciple of Christ. I love how Jesus always begins with the condition of our heart, which is what we have seen in the first set of beatitudes. His goal is for our heart to model His.

In this fourth beatitude, Jesus uses a metaphor we can all relate to because the desire for food and water are the strongest cravings, or needs, we have. In the same way that our bodies need food and water to survive, our soul desperately needs God. To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to have a great spiritual longing for it. In Psalm 42:2 we read, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” This isn’t just a passive longing; this is an active seeking. It reminds me of a child’s persistence and determination when they really want something! This is the eagerness we should have when seeking God.

So many times, we get caught up in trying to figure things out on our own, but a faithful disciple of Christ will seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness above everything else (Matthew 6:33). The person who does this will be blessed because of the satisfaction their heart will experience. The words “It is well with my soul” will ring true if we hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness.

The same water that Jesus offered the woman at the well, is the same water that he offers us today: “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life” (John 4:14).

If we want to be spiritually whole and experience true joy, let us actively seek Righteousness by nurturing our relationship with God. He alone can satisfy the hunger and thirst of our soul. And as His living water springs up within us, it will inevitably reach out to others.

Suggested prayer: Lord, it is my hearts desire to know you more each day and seek your righteousness. Fill me with your living water that it may overflow to those around me and bring them to you. Help me eagerly and actively seek you above all else. Thank you for the joy and blessing that comes from a life founded in you, and for the eternal life I have in you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
