“People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked
paths will be exposed.”1
Sometimes the fear of punishment can motivate someone to
change their actions for the better more than anything else. This was the case
with one mother who decided she would put the fear of a speeding ticket in the
drivers who were speeding past a local elementary school. She decided to park
her car in front of the elementary school every morning and point her black
hair dryer, shaped like a radar gun, out of the window at speeding cars. The
effect was dramatic as drivers quickly slowed down fearing they might get a
speeding ticket.
I have seen the same happen on the freeway multiple times!
Traffic will be flowing smoothly, then suddenly it comes to a stop because
people see a police officer on the side of the road and start slamming on their
brakes!
It is always easier to do the right thing, like obeying
traffic laws for example, when someone is watching. However, as children of
God, we are called to live a life of integrity all the time! Some may define
integrity as practicing what you preach or doing the right thing, even when it
is costly, especially when it would be easier to do the opposite. The
dictionary defines integrity as “the quality of being honest and having strong
moral principles; moral uprightness.” A commitment to integrity sets us apart as
children of God and reflects His character, as He is a God of complete and
perfect integrity.
“God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so
he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever
promised and not carried through?”2 God keeps His promises and never
fails. Therefore, our faith can be securely built on Him!
Living a life of integrity will bring you peace of mind. As
today’s verses tells us, “People with integrity walk safely…” You don’t have to
worry about covering up lies, being afraid of punishment, or being found out…
this would be an exhausting way to live! But being a person of integrity will
bring blessings and allow you to be a light to others, which will lead them to
Jesus.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, forgive me for the times I have
failed to live with integrity. Please mold my character to reflect yours. Help
me be a person who keeps my word, and acts in complete honesty. Help me practice
this with my family, friends, and with every person you allow me to meet. Thank
you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
