“Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools
and get in trouble.”1
Today, we are surrounded by influencers. Whether on social
media, through blogs, or the people we interact with, we are constantly receiving
information on a variety of topics. However, it is important to remember that
who we allow ourselves to be influenced by will affect the influence we are to
others as well.
We should regularly evaluate who is influencing us the most
and be sure that their heart is attuned to God, and filled with His wisdom. God’s
wisdom is not the same as the world’s wisdom. Wisdom from God will always be in
tune with His Word. And remember, the beginning of wisdom is the fear of God. Therefore,
we want to surround ourselves with people who fear God, follow His commands, and
are trying to live according to His will. This is not to say that they will not
fail or stumble, but if they do, they will get back up and cling to God’s
strength to face the things they can’t. They will be honest about their struggles,
but they don’t intentionally put themselves in situations that will tempt them
to disobey God. These are people that we can walk alongside and grow in faith
together.
Does this mean we should never interact with people who don’t
believe in God or are not glorifying him with their way of life? No. We will
inevitably spend time with them through work, school, exercise groups, our
neighborhood, etc. The difference is that we are not being influenced by them,
instead these are the people that God wants to reach through our influence!
Suggested prayer: Lord, please give me the wisdom to
discern who is wise and surround myself with such people. Help me choose to be
influenced by those who will help me grow in my relationship with you, and use
me to be the salt and light in the world, amongst those in my close circle who
don’t know you yet. Help the influence I give them point them to your great
love. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
