Close Friends

“A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”1

Making friends is hard! At any age, the thought of approaching a group of people to make friends can cause a person to feel anxious. As children on the playground, the anxiety is lessened by a mutual love of swings and slides. Through elementary and middle school, group projects make it easier to talk to peers that students have been hesitant to approach. In high school, the game begins to change as teenagers have become more selective as to who is allowed in their circle; making friends takes anxiety to the next level. In college, young adults begin to realize the importance of choosing quality over quantity. Adulthood brings a whole new challenge to the table. We understand the difference between friend and acquaintance, and at times have plenty of both. Through any stage of life, we all desire to have at least one close friend. And that is exactly God’s plan for us! He doesn’t ask us to sit back and wait for friends to come to us though. In Proverbs 18:24, God’s Word tells us that “A man that has (or wants) friends, must himself be friendly…” Sometimes we must be the ones to step out of our comfort zone and start up a conversation. Taking that first step enables us to build meaningful relationships and develop a love for others.

If we are to follow Jesus’ example, he didn’t think twice; he boldly stepped forward and told those men to follow him for he had the Words of Life. Those men soon found out that Jesus was dependable without a doubt, he cared and worried for their emotional and spiritual wellbeing, he was the best friend they could ever have. He gave his life for them without asking for anything in return but their trust. He granted forgiveness freely and loved unconditionally.

Can we be that kind of friend? Can others depend on us? Do we care for the spiritual wellbeing of our friends enough to tell them about Jesus and share Salvation with them? We aren’t too old to make new friends. Regardless of their position in society or personality type, everyone needs a friend to love them and lead them to Jesus. We can all be that friend!

Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, I tend to shy away from making new friends. I cower at the thought of taking the first step. But, Lord, I want to be like you. I want others to follow me because they see you in me. Allow me to see them through your eyes, so that I can love them like you do. Give me the courage to be friendly to someone who might need a friend today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
