Avoiding Conflict

“Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not allow this conflict to come between us or our herdsmen. After all, we are close relatives! The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, then I’ll take the land on the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I’ll go to the left.’”1

Abraham (Abram) and Lot had been living together for some time; however, their possessions had exceeded the space available. This caused some quarreling between their herdsmen, and Abraham realized that the only way to avoid further conflict was to go separate ways. Abraham loved Lot and gave him the opportunity to choose his land first. Abraham was not concerned, but trusted that God was his provider, and he humbly accepted the land that was left. However, Lot made his decision based on what he saw… the grass may have looked greener near Sodom, but Lot was wrong. Unfortunately, this decision ended up causing Lot much grief, including being taken captive when Sodom was attacked. Even then, Abraham went with his men to rescue his nephew Lot. The sacrifices that Abraham made for Lot’s wellbeing were a true example of humility, love, and teaches us how relationships are more important than arguing over material possessions or desires.

Imagine if Abraham would have joined in the conflict with his herdsmen against Lot. Things could have escalated and totally ruined the relationship between these two men. However, Abraham trusted God in all things and sought to have peace in the middle of a tense situation.

How do we handle conflict in our relationships? Are we quick to engage in arguments or do we seek to pacify the tension? Whether it be with family or friends, do we seek our own wellbeing above all else? Romans 12:18 reminds us to “Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” How we respond in difficult situations can be one of the greatest testimonies of faith to those around us. Let us do all that is in our hands to honor God in all circumstances and trust that he will handle the rest.

Suggested prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have put things or desires above the people in my life. Give me wisdom to avoid unnecessary conflicts and do all that I can to live peacefully with others and show them your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
