Making Our Life Count

“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.”1

Recently, I had the blessing of attending a memorial service for our dear friend, Dick Innes. Richard “Dick” Innes was the founder and director of ACTS International for 48 years. He retired as director approximately four years ago, and was called home by our Lord on January 10, 2023. I already knew from personal experience what a great man of God Dick was, but being able to hear story after story of his impact on those around him was so beautiful.

Since early adulthood, Dick dedicated his life to faithfully serving God. He served in many different areas, until he created the amazing ministry of ACTS International. He touched so many lives through his wise council which he shared though our Daily Encounters and the books he wrote. He had such a gift for helping people shift their focus from the symptoms of the problem to the root of the problem. He wanted people to experience true freedom from their past hurts and find complete healing in Jesus Christ. If I had to choose just a couple things that I learned from him, the first would be his genuine love for EVERYONE. He made no exceptions when it came to sharing this love. He was comfortable around anyone and made people feel welcome and appreciated. The second would be the joy that he so effortlessly demonstrated. He had the best sense of humor and lit up the room whenever he walked in. He was quick to express gratitude and give compliments. He experienced such great joy in telling others about Jesus. His daily prayer was, “Lord, I am available. Please make me usable.”  And God did that without a doubt! I feel truly honored to have worked alongside him. He lived every moment to the fullest during his 90 years on earth and I know that he is rejoicing with our Savior whom he so deeply loved.

I left that memorial service praying that God help me to love others like Dick did. Because I know that if I can learn to love God above all else, and learn to love others like the Lord commands, my life can, and will, have a positive impact on others. I want each moment of my life to be for God’s glory. When God calls me home one day, I want Him to feel proud of how I administered the gifts and talents he gave me, but even more importantly I want him to say I followed his example well. That others would remember me because of the love I gave them, and the joy I shared with them. I want to end this life knowing that I gave it all for Christ because He gave it all for me.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for beautiful examples of lives well lived. I am available and ask that you make me usable as well. Help me love you more than anything, and love others without exception. Make my life count for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
