Bless
the Lord, O my soul, and all that
is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord,
O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.1
Each and every one of us battles a common
problem: We are forgetful! We can remember the lyrics to the popular songs of
our youth and the storyline and catchphrases of the many movies that we’ve
seen. We can remember all kinds of things, especially what others have done to
us or have said about us, but we tend to forget that which the Lord has done in
our lives. We have a long memory when it comes to our hurts, our sorrows, and
our burdens, but a very short memory when it comes to recalling just how good
the Lord has been to us!
As we continue in this season of Lent, I
encourage you to meditate on the Lord’s blessings and all the benefits that
come from following Him. David came up with a pretty good list in Psalm 103,
reminding himself not to forget them! What can you add to this list? As
Christians, we often forget who God is; we forget that we are children of the
King! It’s time to remind ourselves of the blessings that have filled our lives
since we came to Christ. We tend to get caught up in the problems and troubles
of life, so much so that we forget where the Lord found us, what He did for us,
and where He is taking us! Fortunately for us, in this ever-changing world, we
can rely on the fact that Jesus Christ is always the same (Heb. 13:8);
steadfast and unmovable (1 Cor. 15:58). If you’ve never trusted Jesus as your
Lord and Savior, I invite you to do so today. Start by asking Him to forgive
your sins and accept that He died on the cross for you because He loves you,
and then count that as the first blessing on your list!
Suggested Prayer: Heavenly Father, you
have filled my life with abundant blessings, and you have also given me times
of trial so that I might learn to rely on you. In either circumstance you have
been by my side, and I am so thankful! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
