"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’”1
A first-century theologian once said, "We may find unceasing anguish in our day, but our days must never lose unceasing hope." This phrase makes a lot of sense, do you know why? Because human beings are marked by hope. The way we live today is completely determined by what we believe about the future. Today, hope is sold in many different ways " empty promises and an unrealistic view of reality " but Jesus shows us a hope that endures and triumphs.
In today's passage, in the midst of the devastation, Jeremiah prophesied God's words to a people who desperately needed them, even though it was not good news. God chose Jeremiah to communicate these words, and he was faithful in communicating the message, regardless of the ridicule and resistance of the people. Yet, in the midst of grief, Jeremiah chose to speak of hope. He had the conviction that better days would come. How? He forgot what wasn't important and remembered what was necessary and sometimes forgotten. God was able to rescue him from the pit and bring him into an attitude of hope.
This is key for us as well. Jeremiah recalled God's unfailing love, his mercies, his unending faithfulness, and the undeserved inheritance we have in Him. God's words are still so alive, active, and appropriate to this day. If you need God's hope today, remember his faithfulness, his love, and his mercy. Today decide to fully trust God in the midst of your situation, no matter how difficult it may seem. He holds you in His loving arms.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that we have hope in you. Jeremiah's words speak to my heart today and remind me that you have the ability to rescue me and lead me to live a life that pleases you. Today I remember your unfailing love, your mercies, your faithfulness, and the undeserved inheritance I have in Christ. Help me to remember your promises to live victoriously. Lord, you are all I have, and I will hope in you. In your precious name I pray, Amen.
