A hot-tempered person
stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.1
When conflict occurs,
what should our reaction be?
Turning to the Lord in
prayer is always the best way to act in a crisis. In doing so, we can ask Him
to give us:
Spiritual discernment.
God knows and understands the source of the problem perfectly, and He can also
allow us to understand it. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we will have a
better perception of the situation.
A calm spirit. Our human
nature will want to react quickly in order to defend itself or fight for what
we believe is right. But before we act, it is important to focus our attention
on God and experience the inner peace He promises (John 14:27).
Wisdom. The Lord told
His disciples that the Holy Spirit would give them wise words (Luke 12:11-12),
and He will do it for us as well. If we are tempted to speak rashly, we should
ask the Spirit for directions and words to say (Psalm 141-3).
God has called us to
represent Him in every situation in the same way that Christ did: in dependence
on the Heavenly Father. The next time someone speaks to you critically, focus
your heart on God and allow Him to direct your response.
Suggested Prayer: My
Loving Father, thank You that You equip us with Your Holy Spirit to deal with
conflicts. Thank You that You give us spiritual discernment and wisdom through
Your Holy Spirit. Help me to be guided by Your Holy Spirit in the midst of
conflict. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
