“In the same way, let your
good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly
Father.”1
In the book of Matthew,
chapter 5, Jesus tells us that we are the salt and light of the world. We are
the salt of the Earth because we give it flavor and make it better, and
we are the light of the world because we are to shine His light for all to see.
Jesus uses the example of someone lighting a lamp because when someone lights a
lamp, they do not put it under a basket to hide it. Instead, it is placed on a
stand so that everyone can see it. In this case, God is the person who lights
the lamp, we are the lamp, and our good deeds are the light that we shine.
So how are we supposed to
shine His light exactly? Well, there are many ways to do this! One of the main
ways that we can shine His light is by performing good deeds, big and small.
For instance, we can donate to a charity or hold the door open for someone at
the grocery store. Anything and everything counts when it comes to shining His
light. God gave each one of us a special spark, or gift, that we are to
use in order to shine. Along with the act of good deeds, we can also
shine His light by spreading the gospel. This may be a little bit harder to do,
but it is equally important. If they do not listen when we are telling them
about Jesus, it is okay. We cannot make somebody believe the way we do.
If it is His will, He will draw their hearts to Him (John 6:44). All we can do
is shine His light, share His Good News, and trust that He will do the rest.
Suggested prayer: Lord,
please help me to shine Your light using the gifts you have given me. Please
give me the right words and actions to show who You are to others. Please draw
me and others closer to You and lead us into a better relationship with You. In
the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
