You must have the same
attitude that Christ Jesus had.1
In the beginning of
Philippians chapter 2, Paul encourages us to have a Christ-like attitude. In
Philippians 2:1, Paul questions asking, “Is there any encouragement from
belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the
Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate?” In verse 2, he goes on to
tell us to make him truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other,
loving each other, and working together having one purpose and one mind. He
tells us to not be selfish and to not try to impress others but to instead,
treat others as higher than ourselves showing humility. He tells us to not only
look after our own interests, but to take the interests of others into
consideration as well.
We have the perfect
example set before us: Jesus. He was fully human, but fully God at the same
time. Even though He was God, He did not think of Himself as equal with
God the Father and instead, He gave up His divine privileges and power to take
the place of a slave here on earth (Philippians 2:6-7). However, since He was
also fully human, he went through sorrows and hardships. Life was difficult for
Him just how it is difficult for everyone else, and despite this, He never once
sinned, which is why He is the perfect example for us to follow. None of us are
perfect, nor could we ever be perfect on our own. But because of God’s grace
and great love for us, we can come boldly to Him and ask for the forgiveness of
our sins, and He will forgive us. It is amazing that while we were still
sinners, God showed His great love for us by sending Jesus to die for us
(Romans 5:8). Let us follow His example in the care, love, and forgiveness we
give to others as well.
Suggested prayer: Dear
God, thank you for showing me love and mercy even though I am a sinner. Please
help me to have a Christ-like attitude and for me to be able to show your love
and character to others. Show me the right way to live the life that you have
given me. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
