Physical
training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits
in this life and in the life to come.1
In 1 Timothy
4:8, it says that physical training such as exercise is good and healthy for us
physically. However, it goes on to say that training for godliness is better
than physical training because it promises benefits in this life and in our
future life with the Lord. Of course, we should still take care of our bodies
physically, but we also need to take care of our bodies spiritually. We need to
put into practice all that we have learned from His Word (Philippians 4:9) just
as we would practice exercising and moving our bodies.
We can train
for godliness through prayer, worship, fixing our thoughts on what God wants us
to think about (Philippians 4:8), and being an example of Christ. We can be an
example of Christ by showing kindness and love to others instead of hate, by
being humble instead of proud, and by letting our actions reflect our faith.
Although it is sometimes difficult to keep training for godliness, and at
times, we stray off a little, God will lead us back to Him if we are willing to
follow His lead. In order to put into practice what God calls us to do, we need
to be able to ask God to help us turn from our sinful desires and ways. Even
resisting temptation is training for godliness. Training is not meant to be
easy, which is why we need to keep on training. The more we train, the stronger
we will become in our faith.
Suggested
prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for encouraging me to train for godliness. Thank
you for also showing me how I can be an example of You. God, please help me and
give me the strength to keep on going so that I can strengthen my faith in You.
In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
