He went on a
little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If
it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want
your will to be done, not mine." Then he returned to the disciples and
found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?
Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit
is willing, but the body is weak!”1
We are all
tempted. No matter how steadfast your faith is or how long you have walked with
Jesus, no one is exempt. Sometimes it manifests as a soft voice, other times,
as an overwhelming pressure on the mind. You know what it feels like... But if
you could explain it, could you say clearly what temptation is?
Temptation is
an invitation to take a legitimate, God-given desire, beyond the limits that He
Himself has established. Many people reject this idea, refusing to believe that
that which generates guilt can have a link with the Lord. But think for a
moment: In what areas do you most often face temptations? Materially? In relationships? With food? These are all blessings that God created for a purpose, and through
which He also seeks to bless us. The problem lies not in the desires
themselves, but in when we take them out of context and cross the healthy
boundaries that God has designed for our lives.
One of the
enemy's main strategies is to distort a holy desire. Whenever you face
temptation, ask the Lord to remind you where this impulse came from in the
first place. Then ask Him for strength not to be deceived or led astray from
the sincere faithfulness to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3).
Suggested
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I come before You and acknowledge my weaknesses.
Sometimes it can be something as mundane as the use of social media or
overeating. Lord, You know everything about me and still You love me. Thank you
that you do not want to leave me where I am. You want me to keep moving towards
You, to have a closer and more intimate relationship with You. Thank you that I
am not alone. The Helper is with me every moment of my life. Thank you, in the
name of Jesus, Amen.
